Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan reported a positive medical policy statement for minimally invasive SI joint fusion, effective March 1.

Here are five highlights:

1. BCBS of Michigan is the first of 36 BCBS plans to issue a positive coverage policy.

2. The payer analyzed extensive data on MIS SI joint fusion surgery, specifically involving SI-BONE's iFuse implant.

3. The implant is a minimally invasive device intended for fusion for sacroiliac joint disorders.

4. The iFuse implant is the only SI joint fusion device with studies showing improved pain, patient function and quality of life 12-months post-implantation.

5. "BCBS of Michigan is a leading BCBS plan and the positive medical policy statement for MIS SI joint fusion will provide access for many patients suffering from certain types of SI joint-related low back pain who now ill not longer have to go untreated or worse," said Michael Mydra, vice president of health outcomes and reimbursement, SI-BONE.
