New York City-based NYU Langone Medical Center researchers examined popular fitness devices, according to Fierce Medical Devices. They analyzed the top 27 consumer fitness devices, discovering their features and ability to provide useful data for pre- and post-op orthopedic surgery.

Here are five observations:

1. The researchers found most of the devices synced with an online portal or smart phone app.

2. Of the devices, more than one-third exhibited battery lives of more than seven days.

3. Three-quarters of the devices were water-resistant and one-quarter were waterproof.

4. Of the fitness devices, 85 percent had a pedometer and 63 percent included a heart rate monitor.

5. A majority (63 percent) of the devices included sleep recording.

6. Although only 15 percent of the fitness devices connected to EMRs, more than two-thirds of the devices data-shared in some way.
