Zimmer Biomet acquires Ortho Transmission implant line: 5 key notes

Spinal Tech

Zimmer Biomet completed the acquisition of Ortho Transmission's transcutaneous osseous integrated skeletal implant technology.

Here are five key notes:

1. The acquisition complements Zimmer Biomet's ongoing collaboration with the U.S. Department of Defense for developing transcutaneous system for anchoring external prosthetic limbs for amputee patients.

2. Ronald R. Hugate Jr., MD, a former U.S. military surgeon, developed Ortho Transmission's transcutaneous osseous integrated skeletal implant technology. The company aims to leverage Ortho Transmission's designs to offer technology to patients.

3. Ortho Transmission invested more than 10 years into pre-clinical research, animal studies and human biomechanical analysis to address the limitations of conventional molded socket technology with a transcutaneous osseous integrated skeletal implant optimized with Finite Element Analysis design software.

4. The financial terms of the transaction aren't disclosed.

5. Zimmer also recently received FDA clearance for the Nexel Total Elbow and Comprehensive Segmental Revision System.
