Spinal Tech

The Medical University of South Carolina received a $5 million donation for an idea incubator that will include new innovations for spinal surgery, according to a report from The Post and Courier.

The new incubator is called the Zucker Institute of Applied Neurosciences at MUSC. Here are five key notes:

1. Physicians, nurses, students and staff can pitch new ideas for drugs or medical devices at the institute and select proposals will be brought from the idea stage to the operating room.

2. The first product is Sinu-Lok, a device designed to simplify and improve minimally invasive spine surgery. The device already has a patent and will likely come to market late in 2015.

3. The donation was made in memory of Jerry Zucker, The Intertech Group founder who was diagnosed wit ha brain tumor in 2007. His family wanted to help finance a way to accelerate new technology development.

4. The products going through the institute will likely develop mini-businesses with budgets and timelines apart from the institute.

5. MUSC would like to see the institute become self sustaining. In the future it could generate revenue for the University and investors.
