Dr. William Hunter performs 1st spine surgery with ECA Medical's Revolution system: 6 key notes

Spinal Tech

The first surgery using ECA Medical Instruments' Revolution Spine System lumbar implant from the Intelligent Implant Systems was a success.

Here are five key notes on the surgery:

1. William Hunter, MD, of Neurosciences & Spine Center of the Carolinas performed the procedure in Charlotte, N.C.

2. The Revolution Spine System is a custom disposable instrument kit with a full complement of disposable fixation instruments. The instruments include the first single-procedure cannulated torque limiter, ratchet and fixed driver, awl, pedicle probes and compression shafts.

3. The company's IIS Revolution system is a pre-sterilized, single-use posterior spinal fixation system providing hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers the ability to provide care with increased productivity and reduced costs. The Revolution system can immobilize and stabilize spine segments in skeletally mature patients as an adjunct to fusion.

4. The system is designed to simplify workflow because the instruments don't need cleaning or reprocessing before every procedure. They also minimize infection risk due to cross contamination.

5. ECA Medical Instruments estimate hospitals and ASCs could save more than $1,200 per procedure by using the disposable instrument sets. The healthcare industry could save billions of dollars if providers converted to single-use instrumentation, according to ECA Medical.

6. The company's IIS Revolution system commercial launch is underway. The Revolution implant kit has FDA clearance and is available through distributors in North America.
