Hackensack University Medical Center buys spine surgery robot: 4 key notes

Spinal Tech

Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center purchased Mazor Robotics' Renaissance Spine Surgery system.

Here are four key notes:

1. HackensackUMC is the first hospital in New Jersey to purchase the Mazor Robotics Renaissance Spine Surgery system, designed to improve accuracy in medical screw placement during spinal procedures.

2. The technology is clinically validated for 1.5 mm accuracy for increased patient safety during spine surgery. Surgeons can pre-plan the optimal surgery using the robot's CT-based three-dimensional simulation of the patient's spine.

3. During the surgery, the robot guides the surgeon's hands and tools based on the pre-planned location. Surgeons can use the technology for less invasive procedures as well as challenging procedures.

4. The robotic technology reduces the need for fluoroscopy and intraoperative X-rays and the subsequent radiation exposure.

"To be the first hospital in New Jersey offering Mazor Robotics Renaissance Spine Surgery is truly a testament to HackensackUMC's commitment to remaining at the forefront in utilizing technology for the benefit of our patients in New Jersey and beyond," said Michael A. Kelly, MD, chairman of orthopedic surgery at HackensackUMC.
