A study, published in the Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part B: Applied Biomaterials, has showed percutaneous intramedullary fixation can effectively provide stabilization of bone fractures.
The study examined the intramedullary application of IlluminOss Medical's light-curable photodynamic bone stabilization system. The system gained CE Mark approval and is commercially available in international markets. It combines the use of proven medical polymers and traditional balloon catheter technology.
"The data demonstrated that the photodynamic bone stabilization system did not disrupt bone formation when injected into intact bones, but did lead to increasing levels of cortical bone from eight to 26 weeks when used in the fracture gap," said Brett G. Zani, PhD, director of applied sciences at CBSET and principal investigator.
CBSET, a not-for-profit preclinical research institute, published the efficacy data.
