Bacterin received a United States patent for technology included in the company's OsteoSponge products.

Here are five things to know about the patent:

 

1. The claims cover certain demineralized bone matrixes that contain minimum bone morphogenetic protein-2 levels.

 

2. The patent is titled "Process for Demineralization of Bone Matrix with Preservation of Natural Growth Factors."

 

3. The company still has pending continuing applications in the United States that pursue protection on other aspects of the bone demineralization technology.

 

4. Bacterin was the first company commercializing a compressible DBM sponge marketed specifically for handling characteristics, osteoconductive architecture and osteoinductive prosperities for orthopedic bone grafting applications.

 

5. The company plans to continue innovating in this space.
