Episurf Medical Knee Trochlea used for the first time — 5 things to know

Spinal Tech

The first surgery using the Episurf Medical Knee Trochlea, designed to treat cartilage defects in the area behind the patella.

Here are five quick facts about the procedure:

1. Professor Peter Verdonk performed the procedure at AZ Monica Hospital in Belgium.

2. The patient had knee pain, despite previous intervention, and was 47 years old.

3. The surgery took less time than other procedures because of the patient-specific instruments used. Surgeons can customize the surgery to the patient's anatomy and optimize implant positioning.

4. The Episealer Knee Trochlea achieved a CE-certification in October 2014. The product is offered to selected clinics in Europe via a controlled product launch.

5. The company also has the Episealer Femoral Condyle, which has been on a controlled product launch in the fall of 2013.
