Spinal Tech

DRT Medical, a medical manufacturer based in Dayton, Ohio, is planning a new research and development facility in West Chester, according to a Dayton Business Journal report.

Here are five things to know about the new facility:

1. The $4.6 million facility will also house the company's three-dimensional printers, which are marketed to the medical and aerospace industry. DRT Medical focuses on medical implants, including orthopedic instruments and spine, knee, hip and shoulder implants and instruments.

2. The Ohio Development Services Agency requested $1 million from the state for the project.

3. The new facility will be 30,000-square-feet on five acres of land. DRT Union Centre, a wholly-owned subsidiary of DRT Medical, is currently renting a smaller space in the area but will be moving in when the new facility is complete.

4. When the facility is complete, the company committed to creating 10 full-time jobs on the site in addition to 12 they already have working there and nine workers retained at a different facility. DRT Medical includes 700 total employees with 450 spread across the Dayton region, according to the report.

5. Three-dimensional printing is a budding opportunity in the medical device space and DRT hopes the technology will boost its bottom line.
