New Test Will Fight Infection in Hip, Knee Replacements

A major U.S. drug maker is developing a test to combat infection in patients receiving hip and knee replacements, according to a Fox News report.

Abbott Diagnostics Group, a unit of Abbott Laboratories, is partnering with the privately held Genetics Laboratory, which specializes in orthopedics, to develop the test. Based on Abbott's PLEX-ID system for identifying microbes, the test aims to help physicians detect infections in the body's joints long before the patient displays physical symptoms.

"Orthopedics is one of the leading opportunities for this technology because of what it's able to do for patients who have orthopedic infections, which are difficult to diagnose by conventional methods," said Dave Ecker, divisional vice president at Abbott Molecular.
