Orthopedic surgeons in the United States are making more than double their counterparts in countries such as Australia, Canada, France and Germany, according to a Bloomberg report.
According to a study published in Health Affairs, orthopedic surgeons received $442,000 on average in 2008, while orthopedic surgeons in the United Kingdom received only 73 percent as much. French orthopedic surgeons received the lowest compensation among countries comparable to the United States, at $154,000 per year.
A potential reason for the disparity could be the difference in healthcare systems, as the countries compared with the United States had variations on the state-run healthcare systems, according to the report.
The study also noted that orthopedic surgeons made, on average, five times more than the cost of their training. By contrast, primary care physicians made only about $5,700 more than the annual cost of training.
