Marc W. Hungerford, MD, director of joint replacement and reconstruction at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore recently became the first orthopedic surgeon to perform the MAKOplasty partial knee resurfacing procedure using the RIO Robotic Arm in the state of Maryland, according to a hospital news release.

The robotic system provides surgeons with real-time visual, tactile and auditory feedback to enhance surgical precision. The robotic system improves implant alignment and positioning during surgery, which improves the life expectancy of an implant, according to the report.

In addition to the MAKOplasty procedure, Dr. Hungerford has a professional interest in the minimally invasive anterior approach to hip replacements and total and partial knee replacement.
