Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine welcomed its first class of students and will celebrate a public grand opening in September, according to a Western Michigan University news report.
The program is a collaboration between WMU and Kalamazoo's teaching hospitals — Borgess Health and Bronson Healthcare. The program has been in planning since 2008 and received preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education in October 2012.
The first class will include 23 students selected from more than 3,500 applicants. The school is a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation.
