Brian Cohen, MD, of Adena Health System in Chillicothe, Ohio, was the first U.S. surgeon to use the Arthrex Reverse Universe shoulder implant device, which was approved by the FDA on May 31. Dr. Cohen performed the procedure on a 72-year-old patient while the operation was live streamed to Germany and several U.S. sites. The device replaces the ball and socket of the rotator cuff.

Dr. Cohen, an orthopedic surgeon, worked with Arthrex on the design of the implant. The technology was crafted to provide a better, longer lasting bond over time, according to the release.
