Hawaii neurosurgeon discusses minimally invasive spine surgery: 3 things to know

William Beringer, MD, director of neurosurgery at Adventist Health Castle Medical Center in Kailua, Hawaii. In an interview with Hawaii News Now, Dr. Beringer talks about minimally invasive spine surgery.

Here are three things to know from Dr. Beringer.

 

1. The standard diameter for a spinal fusion using minimally invasive surgery is around the size of a quarter on either side or less than an inch.

 

2. Minimally invasive spine surgery decreases blood loss and pain and makes recovery and surgery time faster.

 

3. It takes a spinal fusion about an hour and half to complete and a herniated disc around 45 minutes when performing minimally invasive surgery.
