Comparing 3D imaging, navigation systems for spine surgery: 5 things to know

Imaging

A new study published in Clinical Spine Surgery compares two different 3D C-arms for intraoperative imaging and navigation during minimally invasive spine surgery.

The study examines the Siremobile Iso-C 3D from Siemens and Vision FD Vario 3D from Ziehm. The systems orbit around the patient to provide 3D imaging from multiple image sets. The study authors found:

1. The Vision FD Vario 3D was quicker, performing an elliptical scanning arc of 135 degrees in 64 seconds; the Siremobile Iso-C 3D took 128 seconds for a 190-degree scan.

2. Five surgeons compared the images and found the Vision FD Vario 3D was easier to maneuver in the OR; the Siremobile Iso-C 3D was described as "bulky."

3. The Siremobil Iso-CC had higher image quality scores in all categories.

4. For lumbar 3D scans, the Vision FD Vario 3D had fewer artifacts.

5. The study authors concluded, "The Siremobile Iso-C 3D provides high-quality 3D scans in slender spine regions, whereas the Vision FD Vario 3D appears to have advantages in the lumbar spine."
