Stryker closes NC medical equipment plant: 5 key notes

Stryker is closing a medical equipment plant in North Charleston, S.C., formerly Berchtold GmbH, according to a report from The Post and Courier.

Here are five things to know:

 

1. The company notified employees it will close its doors by the end of next year.

 

2. The plant's operations are transitioning to Stryker's exiting manufacturing network, but no other information on the transition is officially confirmed.

 

3. Stryker has not released the number of employees who will be let go or whether employees with have the opportunity to transfer to new locations. However, The Post and Courier reported the work is moving to the Dallas area where the subsidiary overseeing the North Charleston business is located.

 

4. Berchtold GmbH, the manufacturer, was privately-owed when the facility relocated to North Charleston and grew into the company's North American headquarters. Stryker bought Berchtold in April 2014 when worldwide operations and annual sales were $125 million.

 

5. In 2012, when the company celebrated its 90th anniversary, Berchtold has around 115 local employees.
