Healthcare Innovation Council Claims Meaningful Use is Not Furthering Quality

Health Information Technology

The Healthcare Innovation Council, an independent group of healthcare experts, has called upon Congress to reconsider CMS' meaningful use program, claiming it is not furthering Congress' goal of improving healthcare, according to a commentary submitted to six U.S. senators. The commentary was submitted in response to a report released by the six Republican senators last month, which questioned the effectiveness of the electronic health record incentive programs and requested public input.

According to the council, instead of improving patient care, EHR incentive programs are disrupting providers' patient care focus because providers are chasing after incentive funds. The council has recommended recommends to the six senators and Congress that the meaningful use program be rebooted and implemented in ways that help improve care quality and safety.
