A bill introduced to the House of Representatives would offer an electronic health record penalty exemption to near retirement-age physicians who fail to adopt systems, according Medscape. According to the legislation, introduced by Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.), solo practitioners would also get a three-year extension before penalties kick in and specialists would be given bonuses to promote meaningful use.
Hardship exemptions already exist for some specialty practitioners, such as anesthesiologists, and retirement age would become the newest one if Rep. Black's bill passes. The American Medical Association has in the past supported easing requirements for elderly physicians. However, CMS rejected the age exemption during its stage 2 meaningful use final discussions, according to the report.
