Maine Plans Statewide Medical Image Archive Pilot

Health Information Technology

Maine's health information exchange, HealthInfoNEt, is planning to pilot one of the nation's first statewide medical image archives. The image archive will allow healthcare providers in Maine to share images through the health information exchange network. According to the report, an estimated 1.8 million medical images, including X-rays, mammograms, CT scans and MRIs are generated in Maine each year. Currently, those images are stored in various electronic archives and mostly shared between non-affiliated providers by copying images to CDs. HealthInfoNet will consolidate the images into a single archive, potentially saving Maine providers $6 million over seven years through reduced storage and transport costs, according to the report.

Dell was selected to build and operate the new cloud-based archive. HealthInfoNet, Dell and the pilot group of Maine healthcare organizations will work over the summer to confirm the system design and integrate the service with existing picture archiving and communication systems and the HIE. HealthInfoNet expects to end the pilot phase in the fall and expand the service statewide by 2013.
