The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT and six other entities will be developing a new mobile app for diabetes management, according to an ONC news release.
The ONC, the American Diabetes Association, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Health Resources and Services Administration and mobile technology company Voxiva will help the Detroit and New Orleans Beacon Communities design and deploy this campaign over the next two months. The ONC's Beacon Community Program consists of 17 communities nationwide and was set up to show how health IT improved healthcare quality, efficiency and population health.
According to the release, the campaign aims to encourage people to engage with and manage their health, to help people assess their diabetes risks and to connect people with diabetes care resources to manage diabetes more effectively.
Essentially, individuals with cell phones would be asked brief questions regarding their risk for diabetes, and users would respond with a text message. Based on their answers, users would be connected to the resource for their need, such as an online social forum, a discount for a check-up at a local pharmacy or a phone number of a local healthcare provider, the release said.
