3 States With Highest Percentages of Office-Based Physicians Using Basic EHRs

Minnesota had the highest percentage of office-based physicians that reported using a basic electronic health record system in 2011, according to "Health Information Technology in the United States," released by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Mathematica Policy Research and Harvard School of Public Health.
Researchers examined data from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, a nationally representative survey of office-based practicing physicians conducted annually by National Center for Health Statistics. In 2011, 6,592 physicians responded to the survey.

According to the report, the percentage of physicians in the United States that reported using a basic EHR system increased from 12 percent in 2002 to 34 percent in 2011.

Three states with highest percentages of office-based physicians using a basic EHR system in 2011, according to the survey, were:

•    Minnesota — 60.9 percent of office-based physicians reported using basic EHRs
•    Wisconsin — 59.9 percent of office-based physicians reported using basic EHRs
•    North Dakota — 57.9 percent of office-based physicians reported using basic EHRs
