4 Big Physician Practice Technology Trends

Health Information Technology

Here are four practice technology trends that are becoming more popular today, according to a Medscape report. 1. Prescribe apps: Physicians are prescribing apps for patients to manage healthcare, such as counting carbs or glucose monitoring. Happtique is launching a new program for providers to choose, use and rate apps, including some with an orthopedics focus.

2. Miniaturized medical devices:
The FDA has recently approved several miniaturized medical devices, such as the iHealth Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor to measure, track and share heart rate, pulse and measurement time, according to the report. The technology isn’t reimbursed, but providers and accountable care organizations are still investing in them because they can help lower readmissions and improve outcomes.

3. Telemedicine:
Suburban areas are now adopting telemedicine, which has served rural and underserved areas in the past. Approximately 200 telemedicine networks exist, according to the report, and more than half of US hospitals now use them. New developments such as kiosks in pharmacy departments at retail outlets are now providing health screenings as well.

4. Social media:
Physicians are building a presence on social media and communicating with patients using secure smartphones, tablets and desktop computers. Social media also allows patients to interact and has become especially popular among chronic sufferers, according to the report.
