The trial for Dewey C. MacKay, MD, an orthopedic surgeon who is accused of prescribing 3.5 million painkillers over a four year period, is set to begin soon, according to a Cache Valley Daily report.

1. Average compensation is in the mid-range for orthopedic subspecialists. Orthopedic trauma surgeons are compensated on average $592,536 annually, which is less than spine ($710,055) and joint replacement surgeons ($597,834) but more than general orthopedic surgeons ($524,250) and extremities specialists ($531,271), according to MGMA's Physician Compensation and Production Survey: 2010 Report Based on 2009 Data.

Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based MAKO Surgical Corp., a medical device company that markets the RIO robotic arm interactive orthopedic surgical platform as well as RESTORIS implants for minimally invasive orthopedic knee procedures known as MAKOplasty, announced its operating results for the quarter ended March 31, 2010, including revenue of $7.2 million, up 94 percent from $3.7 million in first quarter 2009, according to a MAKO news release.
Warsaw, Ind.-based Biomet has announced its financial results for its third quarter of fiscal year 2010, ended Feb. 28, 2010, which included a 9 percent increase in net sales but a $3.1 million operating loss, according to a Biomet news release.
