The American Health Information Management Association is transitioning its training course emphasis from ICD-9 to ICD-10, according to a Fierce Health IT report.
Patt Peterson, director of education and workforce for AHIMA, said that students at many institutions are learning both code sets. She said while ICD-9 will continue to be taught after this year, the emphasis will shift to ICD-10.
AHIMA certifies both hospital-based and ambulatory care coders. The association also offers continuing education for coders who already have jobs. The society believes new graduates will lead the transition to ICD-10 because of their immersion in the training courses.
